The scale showed the weights of the students. Some of them are given below.

                    Arun : 27 kg Ajay : 30 kg Varun : 25 kg Rachna : 19 kg

                    Geeta : 21 kg Puneet : 33 kg Sujoy : 32 kg Rajeev : 27 kg

Observe the weights of students given above and answer the following questions.

                      1. Who is heavier—Varun or Rajeev? ______________

                     2. Who is lighter—Puneet or Sujoy? ______________
                     3. Name the heaviest student. ______________

                     4. Write the names of the students in order from the lightest to the heaviest.

The quantity of matter of an object is called its mass. Generally, we use the word
weight instead of mass. Hence, the weight of an object tells us how heavy an object is.

By observing two objects, we can compare them to tell which is lighter or heavier.

A book is lighter than a school bag. A water bottle is heavier than an eraser.

To find the exact weight of the object, we use a balance and weights.
Different kinds of balances are shown here.

In general, the following standard weights are used:
